iPhone 14 and 14 Plus: just a little more…

Apple recently presented its new iPhone 14 range. Spotlight on the "entry-level" versions, 14 and 14 Plus, significantly less revolutionary than the Pro models.

From a distance, the iPhone 14 looks a lot like the iPhone 12 which brought a significant design change with its straight edges. And up close too, because unlike the Pro versions which introduce two perforations – one circular the other oval – for the front sensors, the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus keep the notch at the top of the screen.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, screens

Exit therefore the Dynamic Island process of the Pro versions, for models keeping a conventional appearance. Note, however, that the Mini version has disappeared. The Oled Super Retina XDR screen has a diagonal of 6.7" (17 cm) on the iPhone 14 Plus, 6.1" (15.5 cm) on the iPhone 14. The latter has a resolution of 1,170 x 2,532 pixels (460 ppi) in 19.5:9 aspect ratio with support for HDR10, HDR HLG and HDR Dolby Vision technologies, and a bright peak of 1,200 nits. The screen of the iPhone 14 Plus benefits from a resolution of 1,284 x 2,778 pixels (458 ppi) in 19.5: 9 format with management of HDR10, HDR HLG and HDR Dolby Vision technologies, and again a bright peak 1200 nits.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, processor

The device is powered by the Hexa Core A15 Bionic processor (2 x 3.23 GHz Avalanche + 4 x 1.82 GHz Blizzard) engraved in 5 nm which has already proven itself on the iPhone 13 (another point of differentiation with the Pro models benefiting for their part from the new A16 Bionic). This chip is supported by 6 GB of Ram and an Apple graphics processor (5-Core).

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, dual photo sensor

The new dual camera consists of a wide-angle (f/1.5, 26 mm, 1.9 µm photosite, Dual Pixel, PDAF, optical stabilization) 12 Mpxls with autofocus, combined with a ultra-wide angle (f / 2.4, 13 mm) 12 Mpxls too. This combination offers a 2x optical/5x digital zoom and allows exceptional shots. Note, a Night Mode allows you to capture beautiful shots in low light conditions and a Smart HDR 4 function distinguishes human beings to operate a specific rendering according to the areas of the image. Note that the main sensor is larger than on the iPhone 13, for better light capture and therefore higher quality photos in low light conditions. Apple thus announces a quality 2.5 times higher with the main sensor, and 2 times higher with the ultra-wide angle.

The selfie camera is also 12 Mpxls (f/1.9, 23 mm, PDAF). This new TrueDepth front camera with autofocus and a larger aperture allows for even better shots.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, UHD 4K video capture at 60fps

On the video side, the main sensor can shoot up to Ultra HD/4K up to 60 fps, even in HDR Dolby Vision, or in 1080p up to 240 fps; 2160p up to 60 fps or 1080p up to 120 fps on the camera selfie sensor.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus bulk specs

Note also a new function for detecting accidents, in particular car crashes. The new iPhone 14 Pro sensors can indeed detect if they have been shaken as in an accident, and automatically offer to call for help. In the same vein, it is possible to make emergency calls via satellite, perfect if you find yourself stuck in the middle of nowhere. On the autonomy side, Apple promises up to 26 hours of video playback on iPhone 14 Plus, and 20 hours on iPhone 14. A record on iPhone, if we are to believe the manufacturer's statements.

Waterproof, Wi-Fi 6, Face ID and Dolby Atmos

In bulk, the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus have an IP68 protection rating and are therefore water resistant for a maximum of 30 minutes up to 6 m deep. Otherwise, we can note the Wi-Fi ax compatibility as well as the support for Dolby Digital (AC-3), Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC-3) and Dolby Atmos audio formats. Face ID and NFC are also present.

Also worth mentioning is the MagSafe function, via a magnet integrated into the back of the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus. The latter makes it possible to perfectly position a Qi wireless charger (to optimize charging) or even various accessories offered by the firm at the apple, for example a card holder or a double Qi charger (to restore energy to a iPhone and an Apple Watch simultaneously) or other brands, Belkin in mind.
