Apple, end of the App Store monopoly soon?

iOS17 for iPhone is about to be updated in order to comply with European legislation which will come into force in 2024.

After the integration of the USB-C port, Apple should again quickly comply with new European legislation, allowing the installation of third-party application stores on iPhone and other iOS devices, where only the official App Store was authorized since its debut on the iPhone.

App Store, end of Apple tithe

Bloomberg already warned us at the end of 2022, and the news channel recently reiterated its statements. This “legislation on digital markets” will allow the installation of alternative stores, but also sideloading, that is to say the downloading of applications directly from the internet. The initiative naturally displeases Apple, which will lose its commission, i.e. 15% to 30% of the price of the application or subscription, paid by all developers who go through the App Store and which ended up in its pocket. The company further claims that sideloading will “undermine the privacy and security protections” that iPhone users rely on, leaving them vulnerable to viruses, scams and other data tracking algorithms.

Note that this new function will only arrive in Europe, but that other countries (like the United States) are considering imposing it here.
