Powerful PlayStation 5 Pro: 67 teraflops and PSSR technology

Sony has reportedly developed its own superior upscaling algorithms for the new PlayStation 5 Pro, which will be released at the end of this year.

Previous rumors already predicted that the future and still hypothetical PlayStation 5 Pro - improvement of the current PS5 - would have AI upscaling capabilities, i.e. the higher scaling of the resolution via artificial intelligence algorithms. Concretely, a game in 1080p would automatically switch to 4K in the blink of an eye and in a convincing manner.

Accustomed to leaks that are a priori safe, the YouTube channel Moore's Law is Dead recently gave a layer, explaining that this proprietary Upscaling technology has a name: PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (or PSSR). In detail, the PSSR uses Machine Learning algorithms to improve the resolution from the base data, increasing it to the maximum in Ultra HD 4K, even if UHD 8K with a Performance mode at 30 fps is possible in the future. PSSR will replace the anti-aliasing or upsampling of a game, a bit like DLSS, with the added bonus of HDR compatibility.

A major advantage, the PSSR process does not need to “train” beforehand on a game to extrapolate a higher resolution. Everything happens in real time and the process only takes 2 milliseconds to go from 1080p to UHD 4K, a time that could be further reduced through future optimizations.

PS5 Pro, 3x more powerful than the PS5££££

Another subject unearthed in the same leak, the calculation speed of the PS5 Pro: 67 teraflops of 16-bit floating point calculations, or 33.5 teraflops of single precision calculations, three times more than the 10.28 teraflops of the current PS5. In other words, a much more efficient machine for results that will be seen directly on the screen.
