Phantom Ultimate 2, ultra-thin three-fold foldable prototype smartphone

The three-fold foldable smartphone is still making headlines with an elegant concept by Chinese manufacturer Tecno called Phantom Ultimate 2.

While Huawei is launching the first smartphone with a three-fold screen in two sections, the lesser-known competitor Tecno is presenting its own concept which is not intended to be commercialized, at least not for the moment.

This is not the first time that Tecno has talked about its original innovations in the field of smartphones, we remember for example the first smartphone with a retractable sensor in 2022. As for the model that interests us, it is called Phantom Ultimate 2 and has a [abc]Oled[/abc] 6.78" (17.22 cm) folded screen which increases to 10" (25.4 cm) with a 3K resolution when unfolded.

The device is distinguished by its great finesse, 11 mm when folded compared to 12.1 mm for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and 10.5 mm for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold (remember that these devices only fold in half, not in thirds like the Phantom Ultimate 2). Tecno has developed its own dual-hinge mechanism, tested up to 300,000 folds.

The Chinese manufacturer also claims to have pushed the boundaries of engineering with the smallest battery cover, which is just 0.25 millimeters. The prototype can be used in several modes, including mini-laptop, media viewing or "tent" (see photo above) for translation between two users on either side of the screen. No details are provided on the processor or other components, or on whether such a product will be launched. But its very existence gives clues as to where the foldable smartphone market could be heading in the future.
