iPhone 16, finally better repairability

Compared to the competition, Apple is moving very slowly in some areas, notably the ease of disassembling its devices. But a big step forward has been made on the iPhone 16 range.

Three notable advances in the field of repairability, or the ease with which a device can be taken apart to be repaired. This is what the iFixit site, accustomed to dismantling electronic devices, but also to subjecting them to strange experiments, reveals about the iPhone 16 range. Notable progress, especially when you know to what extent Apple locks its products so that they can only be opened by authorized and equipped repairers, and not by Mr. Average in his living room.

Repairability of the iPhone 16, progress in three points££££

• Progress number 1, the adhesive with which the battery is stuck and which we have already mentioned previously. Basically, removing the battery is now easier since you just have to apply an electric current to it and it comes off almost instantly. Note that this advancement only affects (for now) the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus models. • Progress number 2, only for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models (for now), a rigid steel casing around the battery instead of the usual soft pouch. iFixit explains that it is now impossible to accidentally puncture the battery (during a repair), preventing it from being damaged and catching fire.

• Progress number 3, the ability to open the device from both the front and the back. An advancement that initially arrived on the base iPhone 14 and now affects all four models. Perfect for avoiding going through the fragile screen to disassemble the iPhone, opening from the back being much less risky.
