Orion, augmented reality glasses by Meta

A few days ago, Meta presented a prototype of high-performance augmented reality glasses, called Orion, which is intended to be improved over time to eventually be marketed.

At its recent Meta Connect 2024 conference held on September 25-26, Meta presented its very first augmented reality (AR) glasses: Orion.

Still in the prototype stage, the device is not a simple technological experiment, but a product in development intended for commercialization. Operating in a similar way to the mixed reality mode of the Quest 3 headset, Orion adds a virtual layer to the reality that surrounds us. Supported by the Meta AI assistant, it understands the environment to identify what is around you and informs you of it in a digital overlay. For example, Orion can detect the ingredients on a table and suggest an appropriate recipe. You can also watch videos, answer calls or respond to messages on social networks.

On the technical side, the Meta Orion glasses are accompanied by a wireless module to put in the pocket acting as a central unit and limiting the number of components within the glasses, and a bracelet allowing to control the interface in a gesture manner in addition to the tracking of the movements of the eyes and the voice control. The glasses currently have a field of vision of 70 °, the largest for this type of product until now.

Note that the transparent screens behind the lenses of the glasses are Micro [abc]LED[/abc] models produced by Meta in collaboration either with the British company Plessey, specialized in Micro LED, or with JBD based in Shanghai, also an expert in this type of screen (nothing is official on this subject for the moment). Finally, Meta explained that they are focusing on improving the prototype to provide greater definition, reduced size and an acceptable price for a public release.
