The Marvels: The most expensive movie flop of all time

According to recent figures, Marvel Studios' The Marvels, the biggest box office failure of 2023, is likely to be even more catastrophic than expected.

The film was thought to have made a net loss of $237 million for Disney, which was already pretty good! At the time, Disney reported spending $270 million to make the film, another $110 million on marketing, $21 million in distribution costs, and $54 million in interest and overhead, for a total cost of $455 million. But the film "only" grossed $110.3 million worldwide.

Now, in a twist, according to information about the film tax credit that has just been released in the UK (via World of Reel and Reddit), The Marvels is said to have cost even more. The total cost of the project was $378.5 million as of the end of September 2023, a figure that drops to $325.3 million after film tax credits are paid out.

That's significantly higher than the previously reported production budget of $270 million. As such, Disney's net loss would be in the tens of millions of dollars, and would be close to $300 million. If the math is correct, that would propel The Marvels past the financial disasters of The Lone Ranger and John Carter, and straight into the top spot as the most expensive film flop of all time. After that, it's no wonder Marvel is taking so long to come back...
