It is a novel that many believed could not be adapted. And yet, on December 11, 2024, the series version of One Hundred Years of Solitude, the great epic published by Gabriel García Márquez in 1967, will be released on Netflix. Sold over 50 million copies worldwide, considered by many to be one of the most crucial and brilliant novels in South American literature, One Hundred Years of Solitude traces the destiny of the Buendia family, in the small imaginary village of Macondo in Colombia that they founded, from the golden age to decadence, between curses, wars and impossible loves.

Netflix had acquired the rights to the novel in 2019, five years after Gabriel García Márquez's death. He had long opposed an adaptation of his work for the cinema, insisting that the film be shot in his country and in Spanish, fearing that a classic feature film would not be enough to convey the complexity of the story. But finally, filming was able to begin in Colombia under the supervision of García Márquez's two sons, with the aim of making a series of two seasons and 16 episodes. It is this first season that will be available next December, while waiting for a second that will conclude the story of the Buendia family.

The production of the series is co-signed by Laura Mora (Los reyes del mundo) and Alex García López. Casting-wise, Claudio Cataño and Jerónimo Barón will play Aureliano Buendía at different ages, as well as Marco González, Leonardo Soto and Susana Morales. With sets that follow the evolution of the village of Macondo throughout history, this is the most expensive South American project ever undertaken by Netflix. Will the series live up to expectations? While we wait to find out, a first teaser will allow fans of the book to get a first idea of the result…
