PS5 Pro, 8K yes but not on all TVs

Sony's PlayStation 5 Pro may be the first truly 8K-compatible console, but your audio/video equipment must meet certain requirements to take advantage of it. Here's how.

If you're one of the gamers who owns Sony's latest console, the PS5 Pro, for its 8K display capabilities, you'll need to be equipped not only with an [abc]Ultra HD[/abc] 8K[abc] [/abc] TV to take advantage of it (logical), but that it must also be [abc]HDMI[/abc] Display Stream Compression (DSC) compatible.

Ultra HD 8K DSC on the PS5 Pro…££££

This is because the PS5 Pro doesn't have enough bandwidth via the [abc]HDMI[/abc] 2.1 connector to transfer an uncompressed 8K signal. It therefore takes advantage of the [abc]DSC[/abc] functionality to compress the signal, which is then output by your TV, provided that it is also compatible with DSC via HDMI 2.1. In addition, any intermediate device between the TV and the console (amplifier, sound bar, etc.) must also be compatible, otherwise the signal will only be transferred in Ultra HD definition [abc]4K[/abc]. The problem? Manufacturers generally do not communicate on the presence of DSC on their televisions.

But the flatpanelsHD site has done some research to compile a short list of the main compatible sets. We learn that at Sony, only the 2022 Z9K series is DSC-compatible. Samsung, for its part, offers the widest range of 8K DSC models, including the QN990F, QN900F, QN900D, QN800D, QN900C and QN800C. Finally, at LG, the ZX models as well as the more recent 8K Oled sets are compatible.
