According to figures from Counterpoint Research, sales of premium smartphones (above $400) worldwide grew by 24% between 2020 and 2021, reaching their highest level ever. Stronger growth than the market as a whole, which posted a growth of only 7% over the same period.
Premium smartphones, 27% of global sales in 2021
The premium segment alone accounted for 27% of global sales in 2021, its highest share ever. Several factors explain this success, such as the demand for replacement devices, manufacturers' strategies, and the renewed dynamics of the chain of component suppliers. Note also the strong demand for 5G models.
Premium smartphones, Apple arch-leader
Apple naturally retains its leading position, with 60% market share for the first time since 2017, thanks in particular to the 5G-compatible iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. Special mention for Oppo and Vivo, whose sales doubled in the premium segment in 2021, for growth of 116% and 103% respectively.
