4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray US: good sales figures for 2022

US video market data for physical media for the second quarter of 2022, published by US Media Play News and compiled by NPD VideoScan, is available. On the program, an unprecedented market share for 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray discs and, more generally, an optimistic forecast for the year 2022 for the 4K format.
From April 1 to June 30, 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray disc sales in the US accounted for 13.4% of the physical media market. A figure never reached for the format since its launch. At the same time, classic Blu-Ray accounted for 35.2% of volumes, 51.4% for DVD. If we have to go back to the first quarter of 2018 to find such a low level for the SD format (51.2%), we see that in the meantime, 4K wafers have gradually gained ground, from 5.4% volumes at 13.4%. 2022 4K Ultra HD market share forecast Taking into account these sales figures, but also those of the first quarter of 2022 (second best quarter since the launch of the format) and those achieved for the month of June, the NPD VideoScan organization has unveiled its market share forecasts for the year 2022, in its entirety. Thus, sales of 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray discs should represent 12.6% of volumes compared to 34% for classic Blu-Ray and 53.4% for DVD. Even if streaming has revolutionized the market of video and has seen the number of subscribers to VOD/SVOD services grow strongly in recent years, taking advantage of exceptional circumstances with the Covid-19 pandemic, the physical format is not dead and the spectacle of image and sound unequaled 4K Ultra HD discs are convincing more and more consumers.
