The metaverse - the perfect mix between the internet and virtual reality - is apparently at our doorstep. Ideally, you will be represented there by a 3D avatar for your interactions with the rest of the connected world. And to help make these virtual characters more realistic, Sony will launch Mocopi, a real-time motion capture system that's simple and far more accessible than existing professional solutions.
Sony Mocopi, motion tracker for your avatar
In concrete terms, Mocopi consists of six small movement tracking modules, to be placed via bracelets and clips on strategic parts of the body: head, hips, ankles and wrists. The modules measure only 3 centimeters for 8 grams, and follow your movements with precision to transcribe them via Bluetooth to a dedicated mobile application, which animates an avatar reproducing the slightest of your gestures (see video below).
Sony Mocopi, soon also for the pros
Sony will also release a development kit so that programmers can link motion data to metaverse services as well as 3D production applications. In practice, Mocopi can be used for example in the fitness industry, but also for studios lacking the budget to invest in large professional motion capture systems.
It is not yet known if Mocopi will be able to connect directly to PCs and virtual reality headsets, or if it will be necessary to go through the mobile application. Launch in Japan at the end of January at an indicative price of 49,500 yen, or around 350 euros.
