Philips OLED908: Meta panel specifications update (MLA Meta Booster)

Like the Philips OLED808 series, a week after the presentation of the brand's 2023 TV range at a European conference in Amsterdam, and a week after our discovery of the Philips OLED908 TVs through a first publication ( see our Philips OLED908 TV news: Meta panel (MLA + Meta Booster), P5 Gen7, Game Bar, Ambilight, DTS Play-Fi, 2,100 nits…), we know almost everything about the Philips OLED908 series. The opportunity for the editorial staff of AVCesar.com to update the specifications of these screens.

If the Philips OLED908 TV series, like the Philips OLED907 series marketed in 2022, has three references, it differs in the nature of the diagonals offered. The smallest size, the 48'' (122 cm), disappears to make way for a 77'' (196 cm) specimen. In the end, the OLED908 series therefore includes the references Philips 55OLED908 (55'', 140 cm), Philips 65OLED908 (65'', 165 cm) and Philips 77OLED908 (77'', 196 cm).

Philips OLED908 TV, the main developments

In short, the main differences between Philips OLED908 TVs and OLED907 TVs lie in the use of a new fabric for the soundbar with more durable materials, an Oled Meta panel (see below), the Smart Google TV 12 function instead of Android TV 11, a sound section equipped in 2023 with DTS:X compatibility (precision, a Dolby Atmos decoder and a Dolby Atmos Virtualizer function are still in order) , Bluetooth 5.2 compatibility, and HDR Dolby Vision gaming support up to 120 hertz.

Philips OLED908, Bowers & Wilkins sound section

On TV OLED908 we find the 3.1 soundbar with an 80 W power signed Bowers & Wilkins with a minimalist design, already present on the OLED907 references and still perfectly integrated under the screen panel. Equipped with six speakers in LCR configuration (Left, Center, Right), it delivers a wide sound stage and perfectly intelligible dialogues. It is supported by a large subwoofer located at the back of the TV accompanied by four passive membranes.

Also, the three-sided Ambilight function is still in place. As a reminder, since last year the latter has been managing the color diodes placed at the back of the TV, around the edge of the panel, independently and no longer by group of diodes, for a significantly more precise synchronization with the images displayed on the screen. the screen. Finally, the new Ambilight Aurora gallery feature, rich in numerous embedded images and videos, allows as many exclusive artistic atmospheres in your living room.

P5 Gen7, the heart of Philips OLED908 TVs

On the menu of all these TV series, and featured, the seventh generation of the P5 processor with artificial intelligence for a magnified HDR experience. We therefore find all the features associated with this new chip: Imax Enhanced Label, ambient light sensor, anti-marking system (to counter the Burn-In phenomenon)… Plus an improved version of the Ambient Intelligence process intended to adjust in real time the brightness, gamma and colorimetry adapted to the ambient lighting. This is based on a new light sensor that is much more precise to offer a white point that perfectly matches the lighting of the moment. Namely, the Super Resolution function, also improved, offers unprecedented sharpness and a great wealth of detail. Not to mention two HDMI 2.1 inputs (plus two HDMI 2.0) with eARC, VRR (from 40 Hz to 120 Hz), HFR 4K/120, ALLM, FreeSync Premium Pro and G-Sync compatibility.

Namely, the Game Bar is still present on Philips OLED908 TVs. This allows users to quickly access game-related settings, and change them on the fly without wasting time.

Philips OLED908 TV, Oled Meta panel

As announced above, the Philips OLED908 screens feature an Oled Meta panel, the latest from the manufacturer LG Display, which should offer an absolutely magnificent spectacle. Indeed, the Oled Meta process implements MLA (Micro Lenses Array) technology on the one hand, the Meta Booster function on the other hand to display a sharply increasing light peak, 2,100 nits. Another significant advantage inherent in Meta panels is lower energy consumption (see our CES 23 news > LG Display Oled Meta, 2,100 nits for these 3rd generation panels).

Philips OLED908 TV, HDR10+ Adaptive, HDR HLG and HDR Dolby Vision

Apart from the brilliant Ambilight process in its three-sided version, compatibility with HDR Dolby Vision technologies up to Ultra HD 4K and 120 Hz, HDR HLG and HDR10+ Adaptive is still required.

Philips OLED908 TV, DTS Play-Fi function

In addition to the 3.1 soundbar with an 80 W power already mentioned, the OLED Philips OLED908 TVs benefit from the DTS Play-Fi function allowing the configuration of a wireless 5.1 Home Cinema system or the integration TV in a multiroom system. Namely, Philips OLED908 TVs can even be used as the center channel within a multi-channel setup.

Philips OLED908 TV, rechargeable remote control

The remote control for Philips OLED908 televisions is rechargeable in 2023 (USB-C). It also offers a new keyboard shortcut, “123”, to turn its backlight on/off. The latter can also be associated with the integrated motion sensor to activate automatically as soon as it is grabbed.

Finally, we must also point out a new openwork pivoting central foot with the most beautiful effect (see photo above).

Marketing scheduled for September. Indicative prices still unknown.
