Paid Password Sharing: Any Benefits for Netflix?

Netflix in the United States is seeing a spike in subscriptions after notifying its users that password sharing will now be chargeable.

It is still too early to comment on the impact of Netflix's new policy - namely charging for password sharing for people away from home - and if some news sees this novelty as harmful for the streaming platform , others observe the opposite trend.

Paid sharing of the password, the jackpot for Netflix?

For example, Antenna is keeping an eye on the daily number of new Netflix members in the United States, and noticed a record spike in subscriptions over the four days following May 23. As a reminder, on this date, Netflix sent a message to its users warning them that they would now have to pay to give their subscription to someone outside the home, a practice previously tolerated and even encouraged by the platform.

Netflix, subscription peak higher than that observed during periods of confinement

Specifically, during this four-day window the average daily number of subscribers rose to 73,000, or 102% better than the average of the previous 60 days. What's more, May 26 and 27 even had 100,000 subscribers daily, better than the peak observed between March and April 2020, when the confinements linked to Covid-19 were announced and the public rushed to streaming platforms.

Note that during these four days the number of subscription cancellations also increased, but far from that of subscriptions.
