We didn't necessarily expect it, but the Super Mario Bros film produced by the Illumination studio was a huge success, well deserved in our opinion, knowing that video game adaptations for cinema are rarely synonymous with quality. And when studios see the money flowing, the first question that comes to mind is: when's the next one?
An agreement with Nintendo which should be expensive for Universal
The next might be another legend from the Nintendo stable, namely Zelda. We had a bit of a feeling about it (see The Legend of Zelda soon to be adapted to the cinema?), and journalist Jeff Sneider drove the point home during a recent episode of The Hot Mic podcast. According to a "reliable source", Universal Pictures - for whom Illumination works - is about to sign an agreement with Nintendo to develop a Zelda movie.
He adds that this deal could be very expensive for Universal, because after the profitability of Super Mario Bros, Nintendo is aware of the value of its possessions.
