The Oscars are avoiding streaming, no joke...

Despite around thirty nominations combined, the streaming services Netflix and Apple TV+ only had one victory at the last Oscars ceremony.

A special Oscar ceremony this year since the nominated works from streaming platforms were almost entirely deprived of awards.

Best short film for Wes Anderson ££££

With 19 nominations for Netflix and 13 for Apple TV+ (10 for Flowers of the Killer Moon, 3 for Napoleon), streaming services accumulated 32 potential Oscars. The only victory went to Netflix for The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar by Wes Anderson (trailer below), in the Best Short Film category.

Interesting when we know that Netflix still won 6 victories in 2023 , as well as the Best Director award in 2022 for Power of the Dog by Jane Campion. In addition, that same year, Apple TV+ was the first streaming platform to win the prestigious Oscar for Best Film for CODA.

Towards a challenge to algorithms?££££

Aside from prestige, an Oscar is important since it gives new visibility to the work, attracts new spectators and can therefore increase the subscriptions of the streaming services which produce and distribute this award-winning content. This is something that - we hope - will make platforms think differently than with their algorithms, which tend to always produce and reproduce the same content devoid of vision...
