Messiah of Evil: a little Seventies horror gem to (re)discover urgently

After receiving an enigmatic letter from her father, Arletty (Marianna Hill) travels to Point Dune, on the California coast, to visit him. She finds the house empty and decides to go looking for it. The deserted town soon becomes the scene of strange events.

With its uneasy atmosphere, its dark breakthroughs and its collection of disturbing characters, Messiah of Evil abolishes the boundary between reality and waking nightmare. In the wake of Carnival of Souls (Herk Harvey, 1962) and Let's Scare Jessica to Death (John D. Hancock, 1971), this poetic and morbid work from 1973 produced on a paltry budget by the couple Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz (the screenwriters of American Graffiti and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) ranks among the great rarities of horror cinema.
