To tell this story which takes place in a future that is not completely realistic but credible, the director/screenwriter follows in the wake of a duo of journalists, the veteran Lee (Kirsten Dunst) and her colleague and friend Joel (Wagner Moura), a pair to which are joined a pillar of the New York Times (Stephen McKinley Henderson) and a beginner photographer (Cailee Spaeny).
