iPhone 16 Pro/Pro Max: new button, new “intelligence”

It's tradition, like every year in September Apple presented its new iPhone range, this time with meager hardware improvements, but features around artificial intelligence naturally highlighted. Focus on the high-end models iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max.

As rumored, the iPhone 16 Pro/Pro Max remain the same size as their predecessors, while offering larger displays, 6.3" (16 cm) and 6.9" (17.5 cm) respectively, with ProMotion technology (adaptive refresh rate) and Always On mode, always on with minimal power consumption.

Another advantage of the iPhone 16 Pro/Pro Max displays is extremely thin black borders, the thinnest ever seen on an Apple product. This corroborates the rumors that have been circulating about these displays. Of the two iPhones, it is the iPhone 16 Pro that sports the thinnest black borders, with a thickness of just over a millimeter. A thinness that even applies to the bottom of the device, where the cables and circuits that operate the screen are positioned. To achieve such a result, Samsung Display (supplier of iPhone screens) has worked on the lamination and gloss of the edges, as well as on the miniaturization of the connection cable at the bottom. Thus, it is thanks to these advances that the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will be equipped with a larger screen than their predecessors, without taking up more space in the hand.

Grade 5 titanium is still used around the edges and the devices run on the new A18 Pro chip engraved in 3 nm, more powerful than the A18 of the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus also announced. The only new hardware on the iPhone 16 Pro/Pro Max, apart from larger screens, is an additional touch-sensitive button for camera control, giving access to various functions such as zoom, exposure and shutter.

On the camera side, the iPhone 16 Pro/Pro Max are equipped with a new 48MP Fusion sensor, a 48MP wide-angle (12MP last year) and a 12MP telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom, even on the smallest iPhone 16 Pro (the 15 Pro was devoid of it compared to the 15 Pro Max). Note the video recording in [abc]Ultra[/abc] [abc]HD[/abc] [abc]4K[/abc] at 120 fps, with the option to add slow motion after capture.

All this is well and good, but this year Apple has mainly focused on its suite of Apple Intelligence features around… artificial intelligence, naturally. Siri is more efficient, there are new writing assistance tools, and many others (we talked about it here). Apple Intelligence also includes Visual Intelligence, which allows you to learn more about a captured photo. This response to Google's Google Lens allows you, for example, to find out the menu and opening hours of a restaurant by capturing the storefront, or to discover the breed of a dog you are taking a photo of. Via a later update, the function will even be able to find product references or connect to ChatGPT to solve problems.

iPhone 16 Pro/Pro Max, spatial sound and battery life increased££££

Also note on the iPhone 16 Pro/Pro Max, respectively on the right and left in the photo above, the presence of four more efficient microphones, for better audio intelligibility and even “3D” capture for spatial audio reproduction during videos. Equipped with Qi2 wireless charging, the iPhone 16 Pro/Pro Max provide longer battery life than previous models, according to Apple.
