Cabal: 4K facelift for a cult film

Following the success of Hellraiser (1987), the pinnacle of horror cinema in which gore combines with the sadomasochistic excesses of infernal creatures, in 1990, Clive Barker had a considerable budget for the adaptation of his eponymous novel published in 1988, Cabale. A cult film for fans of the genre who will soon be able to enjoy it for the first time in 4K.

Since the poisonous Dr. Decker (David Cronenberg) convinced him to be a serial killer, Aaron Boone (Craig Sheffer) has left his girlfriend and joined the community of the Nocturnes, marginal monsters who populate the underground city of Midian. On the surface, the authorities are organizing a vast punitive expedition against these creatures of darkness…

Monsters, Inc.££££

Renamed Nightbreed by the producers and made in the British studios of Pinewood, Cabal has given rise to the creation of no less than a hundred monsters with the collaboration of a big name in prosthetic makeup, Mark Coulier.

Bonuses galore££££

Released in the USA by Shout Factory in 2023 and announced in France without further details for the moment in 4K via ESC Éditions, the film could possibly be accompanied by the bonuses of the previous Blu-Ray Collector's edition of the Director's Cut, namely: audio commentary by the director and producer Mark Allan Miller, Making Monsters (42'), an interview with Bob Keene, Martin Mercer and Paul Jones (42'), the Masterclass Prosthetics of Monsters (11'), the Compromise on Editing module (interview with editor Mark Goldbatt), Painted Landscapes: interview with illustrator Ralph McQuarrie, matte painting tests, makeup tests (5'), a subject entitled Rehearsal and tests, a focus on torture scenes (3') and a lost scene in stop-motion. We'll see if the publisher takes them back in full and/or adds new ones...

Especially since other supplements were then on the Blu-Ray cinema version: an analysis of sequences from the film with Christophe Foltzer, a new interview about the film with Julien Sévéon (20'), Tribes of the Moon: the making of the film accompanied by interviews with Craig Sheffer, Anne Bobby and Doug Bradley (72'), the deleted and alternative scenes (22') followed by the original and French trailers. More info as soon as possible.
