iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, not Pro but almost

It's tradition, like every year in September Apple presents its new iPhone range, this time with meager hardware improvements, but features around artificial intelligence naturally highlighted. After our presentation of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max references (click on these references to find out more), focus on the base models, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.

Unlike the Pro models, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus screens remain the same size as their predecessors, at 6.1" (15.5 cm) and 6.7" (17 cm) respectively. Screens capable of a peak brightness of 2,000 nits, which can go down to 1 nit in the dark.

This year, the base models are even closer to the Pro versions, including the Action button introduced last year to replace the silent switch. The button is customizable and serves as a shortcut for several functions (flash, memo, etc.). Another new hardware feature is a touch-sensitive camera control button, giving access to various options such as zoom, exposure and shutter.

On the camera side, the iPhone 16/16 Plus are equipped with a new 48 Mpxls Fusion wide-angle sensor (f/1.6, 26 mm, 1 µm, Dual Pixel PDAF, stabilized, 2x optical zoom) and a new 12 Mpxls ultra-wide-angle (f/2.2, 13 mm, 0.7 µm, Dual Pixel PDAF). The vertical placement of the lenses now allows the capture of spatial videos for the Apple Vision Pro. It should be noted in passing that this is the first time that a non-Pro model can take Macro photos. The Selfie camera is wide-angle in nature, 12 Mpxls (f/1.9, 23 mm, PDAF). Note, video recording in [abc]Ultra[/abc] [abc]HD[/abc] [abc]4K[/abc] at 60 fps (even in [abc]HDR Dolby Vision[/abc]) or [abc]1080p[/abc] at 240 fps on the camera, in [abc]Ultra[/abc] [abc]HD[/abc] 4K[/abc] at 60 fps or [abc]1080p[/abc] at 120 fps on the Selfie camera.

On the processor side, the devices run on the new Hexa Core A18 chip engraved in 3 nm, equipped with a 16-core neural engine optimized for generative models. Perfect since this year Apple has bet everything on its suite of Apple Intelligence features around artificial intelligence. Siri is thus more efficient, there are new writing assistance tools, and many other features (we talked about it here).

Apple Intelligence also includes Visual Intelligence, which allows you to learn more about a captured photo. This answer to Google's Google Lens allows you, for example, to find out the menu and opening hours of a restaurant by capturing its storefront, or to discover the breed of a dog you take a photo of. Via a later update, the function will even be able to find the references of a product or connect to ChatGPT to solve problems.
