James Cameron and Terminator: it goes on and on!

James Cameron discusses the future of the Terminator film franchise with several options in mind to keep the franchise alive forty years after it first hit the screens, and more…

While James Cameron of course directed the first two films (Terminator and T2), he was not overly involved in the third installment or the other three films (Salvation, Genisys, Dark Fate) which never shone at the box office. However, James Cameron has just stated that he still has confidence in the future of the franchise, provided that it is rebooted from top to bottom.

New Terminator, erase everything but keep the AI££££

He specifies: "It's more than an ambition, it's what we're doing. That's all I'll say for now. It's the moment where you abandon everything that is specific to the last 40 years of Terminator, but you keep its principles. Understand: moving away from the characters and story of the previous films and engaging in new digressions while maintaining the thematic focus.

He continues: You have main characters who are essentially fighting for their survival and who have no support from existing power structures, they have to work around them while trying to follow a certain morality. To this nice mix, you add AI. These are solid principles for storytelling today, right? So I have no doubt that the next Terminator films will not only be possible, but they will be great. But this is the point where you abandon all the specific iconography."

Before concluding that in diving back into Terminator recently, he had found some "pretty embarrassing" passages but which do not concern the production: "We did quite well given the resources we had."

Let it be said, James Cameron is working on a reboot of Terminator! The revolution of the franchise is underway. In the meantime, we can't wait to rediscover the first film released this summer in theaters after 4K restoration for its 40th anniversary. It is available for pre-order for November 6 by clicking on Terminator 4K Steelbook.
