What we know about the new Robocop series

Robocop, the 1987 cult film directed by Paul Verhoeven, is to be the subject of a new series for Amazon. Having been discussed for some time in Hollywood, the series is continuing its development at Amazon MGM Studios. Veteran Peter Ocko (Lodge 49, The Office and Parker Lewis Can't Lose...) has been appointed as writer, executive producer and showrunner.

Last April, Amazon Studios announced that it wanted to launch into films and/or television series from the MGM library. Among other planned projects, that of a new version of Stargate, Legally Blonde and therefore Robocop (click for our review).

This new series version of Paul Verhoeven's film has been in development for a year and a half within the studio. James Wan, director of Aquaman and The Conjuring, officiates as executive producer with his production company Atomic Monster. Peter Ocko (Lodge 49, The Office) has joined the project as screenwriter and showrunner.

This is a straight-up serial adaptation of the 1987 film directed by Paul Verhoeven (click to access our Cinécult'), where it all begins when a giant tech conglomerate collaborates with the local police department to introduce a technologically advanced police officer to fight the growing crime, a cop who is both man and machine. It remains to be seen whether the tone of the 1987 film - extreme violence and iconic lines - will be there. Note that the original film has already generated two sequels, a reboot in 2014 and several forgettable TV series.
