SVS SB17/PB17-Ultra REvolution subwoofer, long live the revolution!

The American subwoofer specialist announces two new references, the SVS SB17-Ultra REvolution and SVS PB17-Ultra REvolution. On the program, the complete "reinvention" in terms of subwoofer design, nothing less!

A speaker manufacturer, the American manufacturer founded in 1998 and located in Yougstow, Ohio, designs and manufactures its own loudspeakers.

SB17-Ultra REvolution and SVS PB17-Ultra REvolution subwoofers, 17" cone££££

The SVS SB17-Ultra REvolution (see photo below) and SVS PB17-Ultra REvolution models replace the formidable SVS SB16-Ultra REvolution and SVS PB16-Ultra REvolution models that appeared in 2016 and which had at the time left their mark on the subwoofer market, rallying both Home Cinema and Hi-Fi enthusiasts, not to mention the specialist audio-video media, as their performances were so high-flying. The announcement of their replacements therefore makes all connoisseurs of the brand shudder, which is to say the weight that the SB17-Ultra REvolution and SVS PB17-Ultra REvolution support on their woofer. Their creators are aware and remain calm about the expectations raised. SVS representatives are indeed talking about "unprecedented progress" for their latest products. In addition to a new 17" (43 cm!) speaker, significant developments are to be expected on the [abc]DSP[/abc], the amplification or even the next Auto EQ on-board calibration system, to come in a future [abc]Firmware[/abc] update. SVS assures that the SB17-Ultra REvolution and SVS PB17-Ultra REvolution are the most powerful, most sophisticated, most ambitious and most user-friendly subwoofers ever to come off their production lines. The promise is great.

SVS 17" Boomer, Key Specifications££££

SVS' latest speaker features a dual 8-inch voice coil "to ensure stable transfer of electromagnetic current from the dual mono amplifier to the 24kg ferrite toroidal magnet motor". The speaker also features a composite glass fibre cone and a long-throw catenary SBR rubber surround with the ability to generate SPLs down to 15Hz on the SB17, 12Hz on the PB17-Ultra REvolution.

Both models feature a new STA--800D monoblock Class D amplifier with Mosfet output stage. They also use a sophisticated power supply, including an AC line conditioner with power factor correction that "stabilizes the incoming voltage, corrects the waveform distortions and eliminates electromagnetic and radio interference" to optimize signal quality. The Ultra REvolution subwoofers also incorporate a dedicated DSP from Analog Devices to enhance "all aspects of performance and quality," as well as digital audio processing and multiple DACs (digital-to-analog converters) with a signal-to-noise ratio of 120 dB.

SB17-Ultra REvolution and SVS PB17-Ultra REvolution Subwoofers, SVS App££££

The SB17-Ultra REvolution and SVS PB17-Ultra REvolution can be controlled by an Android or iOS smartphone. Thus volume, low-pass filter, phase, polarity management plus six parametric EQs, room gain compensation, power management and more are possible via the SVS app. A new Auto EQ subwoofer room correction system, operating through the microphone of an Android/iOS device is also in the works and will be available in a future [abc]Firmware[/abc] update to the app. This will allow the implementation of various EQ filters or the optimization of the frequency response at key listening positions “for optimal room performance”.

SVS President Gary Yacoubian££££

Speaking on the launch, SVS President Gary Yacoubian said: “SVS is a company that is constantly evolving. We never settle for modest improvements just for the sake of launching a new product. It’s this philosophy that has fueled the big advances in our flagship 17-Ultra REvolution subwoofers. Literally every part of the ecosystem has been reimagined to achieve an unprecedented level of performance and a world-class experience. They truly represent a leap forward in subwoofer design and I couldn’t be more proud of what our team has accomplished.”
