Lenovo-owned Motorola recently filed an interesting patent describing how a foldable smartphone could tilt autonomously, simply by sensing the distance and movements of your face.
Motorola Patent for Automatic Tilt of Smartphone Display££££
Named Autonomous Control of the Shape of a Foldable Mobile Device, the document details the operation of a hinge that self-adjusts its position via a combination of shape memory alloys (SMAs) and linear resonant actuators (LRAs), which are alternating current vibration motors commonly used in haptic feedback applications.
This system is activated based on the user's position relative to the device, as detected by a set of sensors. Purpose of the maneuver: to tilt the screen automatically if the user moves away or approaches the screen, for example when the smartphone is placed on a table in Tent or Laptop mode. No need to constantly adjust the screen if you ever feel restless or if you are looking for the ideal viewing angle.
