It is no small thing to say that artificial intelligence has shaken up the film industry. But as history has shown time and time again, revolutionary technologies have always been feared before being welcomed with open arms.
Blumhouse Productions at the forefront££££
Initially viewed with suspicion, the generation of images and videos by AI is starting to be accepted by Hollywood. After James Cameron joined Stable Diffusion, it is now the company Blumhouse Productions that will use Meta's Movie Gen generative model.
Unveiled in early October, Movie Gen generates realistic videos and audio from simple text queries. As for Blumhouse, the studio that needs no introduction is notably behind films such as The Purge or the excellent Get Out. The software will first be tested on short films directed by Aneesh Chaganty (Searching), the Spurlock sisters and Casey Affleck (I'm Still Here), which will be streamed on the Movie Gen website.
Involving the creative industry in the development of AI in cinema££££
To calm any fears, Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum said that artists remain the heart of the industry and that the technology is simply an additional aid in their creative capacity, explaining: "We took the opportunity to test this cutting-edge technology and provide our feedback on its pros and cons while it is still in development. These will be powerful tools for filmmakers, and it is important to involve the creative industry in their development to ensure they are best suited for the task at hand."
