Parks Associates recently conducted a study of 8,000 broadband homes in the United States on connected TVs. The result was that 68% of them own a smart TV, up from 63% a year ago and 38% in 2015. For media boxes, that figure is 46%, up from 42% in 2020.

“TVs remain the central viewing device for American homes,” said Sarah Lee, an analyst at Parks Associates. “Samsung Tizen dominates as the most commonly used smart TV operating system (OS) by far. While smart TVs remain the preferred video streaming platform for television, media players continue to be a convenient, user-friendly and cost-effective solution for a consistent experience. Brands can also use them as springboards to promote their own content channels and smart TV models.”
Parks adds that American households consume 35.6 hours of video per week, across all viewing sources: TV, computer, smartphone and tablet. However, more than half of that time (20.4 hours) is spent in front of the big screen.
