In 2024, at the end of September, the physical video market for all formats combined (DVD, Blu-Ray, 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray) will experience a -12% drop in volume with 9.3 million units sold compared to 10.6 million in 2023. In value, the trend is the same with a decline of -12% for a turnover of 144.3 million in 2024 compared to 163.1 million in 2023. On the graphs below, you can also see the difference between the revenue generated by new releases, in light blue and light purple, and catalog titles, in dark blue and dark purple.
4K Ultra HD 2024 France, the figures££££
In detail, the 4K Ultra HD market now accounts for 17.6% of the turnover of the physical video market compared to 13% in 2023, 12% in 2022 and 8% in 2021.
Other interesting data for the year 2024: sales of 4K Ultra HD discs increased by 15% with just over 900,000 units sold. Sales of Full HD Blu-Ray discs fell by 13% to 2.2 million copies, while DVDs fell by 14% to 6.2 million. In terms of value, the 4K Ultra HD market grew by 15% for a turnover of 24.9 million euros, Full HD Blu-Ray decreased by 13% for a turnover of 39.4 million euros, while DVD fell by 17% for revenues of 79.9 million euros.
Another interesting point to note is the weight of new releases in value and volume according to the formats. You can see on the graphs below, sales and turnover of the 4K format (or [abc]Ultra HD Blu-Ray[/abc]) are increasing for new releases, respectively 23% with 700,000 units and 17% and 16.5 million euros. On the other hand, sales of catalog titles in 4K Ultra HD fell by 200,000 units to -3% while turnover grew by 12% and 8.5 million euros. For their part, the formats [abc]DVD[/abc] and [abc]Blu-Ray[/abc] posted mediocre figures with significantly more pronounced declines, to be discovered below. On the right are shown the weights of new releases by format in video turnover in 2024.
In short, the decline of the video market in France continues inexorably. Good news, however, the 4K Ultra HD format is progressing, both for new releases and catalog titles. However, after discussions with publishers, most of whom were present at this press conference, the prevailing feeling is that the floor has been reached or is about to be reached (the feeling was the same at the same time in 2023).
