The Japanese public has the particularity of appreciating mostly local content, pushing Netflix to produce this type of program as a priority. Vice President of Netflix Content in Japan, Kaata Sakamoto expressed his satisfaction with the success of series such as Tokyo Swindlers, The Queen of Villains or The Boyfriend. Since Netflix began reporting its audience figures in 2021, only two English-language series have made it into the Japanese Top 10: the live adaptation of the manga One Piece and the fourth season of Stranger Things.

In the rest of the world, Japanese content ranks third among foreign-language programs, after Korean and Spanish. In addition, "anime" on Netflix was viewed more than a billion times in 2023.
