CES 25 > HDMI 2.2 unveiled, bandwidth doubled

A few days ago, we published a news item about the announcement by the HDMI Licensing Administrator consortium that it would hold a press conference on January 6 in Las Vegas, the day before the opening of the CES 2025 show, to unveil the new HDMI 2.2 standard to the world. We now know more about the latter…

As a reminder, this is an announcement from the HDMI LA organization that will come at just the right time, just hours before the press conferences of AMD and nVidia, also scheduled for January 6, and which in all likelihood should present to the world their new series of graphics cards, respectively GeForce RTX 50 and Radeon RX 8000.

The word at the HDMI Forum££££

“The HDMI Forum will announce a new version of the HDMI specification. The new specification with next-generation HDMI technology and higher bandwidth allows for a variety of higher resolutions and refresh rates and is supported with a new HDMI cable. The new technologies offer higher quality options today and tomorrow to content producers such as television, film and game studios, while making multiple distribution platforms possible.”

HDMI 2.2 for what purpose?££££

Without a doubt, the idea for the HDMI consortium is to compete with Vesa (Video Electronics Standards Association) at the origin of the Display Port connector, which is very present in the computer and gaming worlds. And to align more or less the capacities of the new [abc]HDMI[/abc] standard with those of Display Port 2.1. For this, one of the specifications of HDMI 2.2 is essential, even more than all the others, its bandwidth. To put it simply, the bandwidth of HDMI 2.2 is double that of HDMI 2.1, which displays 48 Gbps, or 96 Gbps (gigabits per second). With the key, the possibility of managing the [abc]Ultra HD[/abc] [abc]8K[/abc] definition at 120 Hz without the DSC (Display Stream Compression) compression protocol present in the HDMI 2.1 standard or even the Ultra HD [abc]4K[/abc] definition at 240 Hz (video game fans will be delighted). Of course, the other technical characteristics of the [abc]HDMI[/abc] 2.1 standard, [abc]VRR[/abc], [abc]ALLM[/abc], [abc]HFR[/abc], SBTM (for Source-Based Tone Mapping)… remain in place. It remains to be seen whether other protocols will be added. See you on January 6.
