Nintendo, winner of the next generation?

There are pessimistic predictions that the Xbox will not survive the next generation of consoles.

DFC Intelligence (via VGC) recently published its predictions for the next few years in the video game market, including that Nintendo will dominate the competition, and that Microsoft's Xbox could disappear from the now historic trio, making way for Sony's PlayStation.

DFC's word££££

"There's only room for two major consoles," DFC explains. "Sony or Microsoft will struggle to occupy a distant third place - a lot will depend on which of these companies can quickly build momentum." No certainty at the time of writing, knowing that factors such as launch date (Nintendo in 2025, the other two around 2028), sale price and other features, including portability, still need to be considered. Sony is however seen as the frontrunner, particularly thanks to its strong exclusive titles, and a loyal installed base.

Microsoft will not die for all that. And if the company dies on the altar of consoles it could be reborn as a major player in the software market: "Microsoft failed with the Xbox Series X/S but has made significant acquisitions to become the largest software publisher in the world, continues DFC. Microsoft has the opportunity to focus on software and distribution models rather than hardware."
