When the iPhone confuses “Trump” with “racist”

There is a whiff of scandal in the United States where the iPhone's Voice Dictation function understands "racist" when you say "Trump". Bug or conspiracy?

The iPhone's Voice Dictation feature lets you transcribe into text what you dictate to it by voice. And recently, users in the United States noticed that the word "Trump" (as in Donald Trump) was momentarily interpreted as "racist", before being corrected.

Trump targeted by Apple ?££££

A godsend at first glance for conspiracy theorists of all stripes who could see in this "bug" a direct attack on the current president of the United States, a sort of petty revenge by Apple against Trump, who has not always been kind to the Californian company. Just recently, the president even declared on his social network "APPLE SHOULD GET RID OF THE DEI RULES, AND NOT JUST ADJUST THEM", all in capital letters in the original message. As a reminder, Trump wants to eliminate DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity) rules in government and private companies.

Bug soon to be fixed, again££££

Apple told Deadline that the bug would be fixed quickly, explaining that the error comes from a phonetic similarity between the two words. For John Burkey, a former member of the Siri team, the problem does not seem accidental and "has the smell of a worrying joke." It should be noted that another bug with political connotations had already slipped into the iPhone in 2024, when the Palestinian flag emoji appeared when typing the word "Jerusalem."

Bug with unfortunate timing or a covert attack, we'll let you be the judge.
