Apple's next 5G mobile chip will support mmWave

Apple's very first proprietary 5G modem, the C1, has barely been introduced in the new iPhone 16e (see our news: iPhone 16e at €719, is it worth the money?) and details of its successor are already appearing.

Corroborating previous rumors on this subject, Taiwanese analyst Ming-Chi Kuo provides details on the technical capabilities of the successor to the C1 chip, the very first 5G modem produced by Apple and introduced in the latest iPhone 16.

This improved version will notably have optimized power consumption, better transmission speed and mmWave (millimeter wave) compatibility. mmWave technology is a range of electromagnetic frequencies between microwaves and infrared, enabling even higher speeds in specific locations such as stadiums, airports and densely populated urban areas.

While millimeter wave functionality is not that complicated to implement in a 5G chip, the technical challenge lies in power consumption and performance stability, but Apple is working on it. It is not known when this modem will be deployed, certainly called C2 (or perhaps C1+, a recurring suffix at Apple), but it could arrive for the iPhone 17th, or even for the iPhone 18 range.
