Initially developed in 2017 by Fox and Samsung studios (see our news Samsung, 20th Century Fox and Panasonic partners to promote HDR10+), [abc]HDR10+[/abc] has been gaining more and more supporters over the years. And the latest announcement is not the least, it is indeed Netflix which, through a publication on its blog, endorses HDR10+ on its content. With the ambition of offering 100% of [abc]HDR[/abc] titles in HDR10+ by the end of 2025.

“We are excited to announce that we are now streaming HDR10+ content on our service for [abc]AV1[/abc]-enabled devices, improving the viewing experience on HDR10+-certified devices, which previously only received [abc]HDR10[/abc] content. The dynamic metadata included in our HDR10+ content improves the picture quality and accuracy on these devices… We continue to improve member satisfaction while preserving their creativity by adding support for HDR10+. This will enrich Netflix’s growing HDR ecosystem, preserve creative intent on even more devices, and deliver a more immersive viewing experience… We enabled HDR10+ on Netflix using the AV1 video codec, standardized by the Alliance for Open Media (AOM) in 2018. AV1 is one of the highest-performing codecs currently available. We had already enabled AV1 encoding for [abc]SDR[/abc] content and saw significant benefit for our members, including higher and more consistent visual quality, reduced playback lag, and better [abc]streaming[/abc] quality in high resolution. AV1-SDR is already the second most used codec on Netflix, behind H.264/AVC, which has been around for over 20 years! With the addition of HDR10+ streams to AV1, we believe it will soon become the most used codec on Netflix… To enrich our offering, we have added HDR10+ streams to new movies and existing popular HDR titles. AV1-HDR10+ now represents 50% of all eligible viewing hours. We will continue to develop our HDR10+ offering with the goal of delivering an HDR10+ experience for all HDR titles by the end of the year.
Note: to enjoy HDR10+ on a compatible TV, you must have subscribed to the Netflix Premium offer (€19.99/month).
