It was during an Instagram video that Joseph Kosinski unveiled the camera that enabled the incredible immersive shots of his next film about Formula 1, simply called F1, with a handsome Brad Pitt in the cockpit.
Until now kept secret, this 6K Action Cam developed in collaboration with Sony represents the evolution of the equipment used on the set of the impressive Top Gun: Maverick, also directed by Kosinski. Custom-designed, the camera allows for previously impossible configurations, such as simultaneously mounting six cinema-quality cameras on a Formula 1 car that's blasting away at full speed.
Action Cam 6K, for (I)max sensations££££
These are relatively small models (hence their name Action Cam, a term generally given to small GoPros) capable of withstanding extreme conditions while capturing a resolution high enough for a cinematic rendering at least, or even Imax. Moreover, the film was designed for this format with spectacular ambitions.
Just as for Top Gun: Maverick, the film team wanted an immersive and visceral rendering, avoiding as much as possible overly obvious CGI for the action scenes. A more than respectable design at a time when we can literally render everything with computer-generated images, to the detriment of realism and warmth that have become increasingly rare in recent years. F1 will be released in cinemas in France on June 25.
