Physical music is dying

It is no surprise that we see that music is now consumed mainly in a dematerialized way.

According to data collected by Statista throughout 2024 from adults aged 18 to 64 in several countries, less than 30% of consumers on average say they consume music in physical format ([abc]Audio CD[/abc] and vinyl), despite a slight rebound in physical sales in 2023 (see our news French music market, the figures), also observed in the first half of 2024, mainly thanks to the (relative) increase in vinyl sales.

The countries most resistant to music in physical format££££

In detail, China is one of the countries least interested in music in physical format with 78% of respondents not having listened to music in this format during the year 2024, and France is in a similar case with a figure of 76%. More examples in the graph below.

A hardly surprising result when you consider that thanks to [abc]streaming[/abc], decades of musical culture are accessible anywhere, anytime, without clutter and for a monthly fee equivalent to the price of an album (and we're not even talking about free options, like subscriptions with ads, or even YouTube).
